Welcome to trebbl.fm
So why are we here?
I shifted to Apple Music a few years ago because the integration with my devices was great, the sound quality was better, and they pay a higher percentage to artists. I was happy with that, but I still felt like something was missing.
Over the recent Christmas break, I found myself doing the washing-up while listening to a podcast (as I usually do). The subject of the podcast was Spotify and what its founder, Daniel Ek, was doing with the profit he was making from the streaming platform.
Daniel Ek invests in, and is now chair of, a company called Helsing, a defence-technology company focused on AI-enabled military systems.
I’m not naive enough to think any company is perfect (I use Apple products, for Christ’s sake), but the idea of a music-streaming service founder investing in military technology got me thinking.
Shouldn’t it be easier to share across all platforms? If someone feels the pull to move to a different service (whether to support artists or for another reason), why should there be a barrier to sharing music with friends and family who are on a different service?
Starting small
So here we are: after a couple of months’ work (I try to keep a healthy balance) and a lot of learning, we have trebbl.fm—a simple web app that allows you to share your music across platforms, starting with Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal.
My intention for this website is to make it easier to love and share music. We might be starting with a website, but I’ve got my eyes on mobile apps in the future—and who knows what else. I have a host of ideas, but reach out if you have anything you feel is missing.
What can we do on trebbl.fm now?
Search and share music across platforms. I cache search data where I can to deliver faster results and reduce API calls, as those increase processing time and, in turn, carbon emissions—another worry of mine, but that’s a separate challenge in an imperfect web.
